Wollongong Retaining Walls was built around one simple truth about this region: the Illawarra is a narrow strip pinned between the escarpment and the sea, so a huge share of local blocks slope rather than sit flat. Homeowners here are forever trying to win a level yard, a flat driveway or a building pad out of a hillside, and that means cutting into the high side, filling the low side and holding the earth back with a wall built to suit the soil, slope and load, and to an engineer's design where required. Over more than a decade working these blocks, from the steep northern suburbs of Thirroul, Bulli and Woonona to the foothills of Figtree and the flatter ground near Lake Illawarra, we have learned exactly how local soil, rainfall and slope behave. We have also seen what goes wrong when walls are built without proper drainage, and we build every wall to avoid that fate. The business is run hands-on by owner Steve Smith, who has spent more than 12 years building retaining walls, working to a qualified engineer's design where the wall calls for it. Steve has worked across just about every retaining system there is, from concrete sleeper and timber through to block, sandstone and gabion, on flat yards and severe slopes alike. He is a firm believer in doing the invisible work properly, especially the drainage that sits hidden behind the wall and decides whether it lasts or fails. We are fully insured with $20 million in public liability cover, and we build every wall to the engineered design where one is required, in line with AS4678, the Australian Standard for earth-retaining structures. On walls that need engineering or council approval, we construct to the certified design and can arrange or advise on the engineer and certifier, so the right people sign off the right work.
