We come to your block, look at the slope, take the levels and talk through what you want the wall to do, whether that is a level yard, a driveway cut, a garden terrace or a building pad. We assess the height, the soil, the drainage the site needs and whether the wall will require an engineered design to AS4678 and council or certifier approval. The same general rules apply as for any retaining wall. A low boulder wall under about a metre with no load above it is often exempt, but this varies by council and site and should be checked. A wall over roughly one metre, or one carrying a surcharge, generally needs engineering design and certification to AS4678 and often council approval or a Complying Development Certificate. The engineer designs it and the certifier approves it; we build to that design and can arrange or advise on the process.
Boulder size is matched to the height of the wall and the load it carries, with taller walls generally needing larger, heavier rock to stay stable when battered back. Bigger boulders also need machinery to place safely, so site access is part of the equation. On a low garden bank smaller rock may do, while a taller terraced wall calls for substantial stone.
