The natural timber face is warm and softens a garden in a way concrete and block cannot. They suit homeowners who want a natural look on a tighter budget and who accept that the wall will need replacing sooner than a masonry one. We use treated H4 hardwood or pine, the grade rated for in-ground contact. For taller or heavily loaded retaining, or walls holding up a driveway or structure, we usually steer you towards concrete sleepers or block, because timber's service life and strength are the limiting factors. On the steep northern blocks around Thirroul and Bulli, timber is often better kept to the upper, lighter tiers.

How we build a timber sleeper wall

The build follows the same sound principles as any wall we make. We excavate and set galvanised steel H-posts in concrete footings, sized to the height and any load. Treated H4 sleepers are then stacked and fixed between or behind the posts, course by course, as we backfill. Drainage is never skipped just because it is a timber wall - if anything it matters more, because trapped water rots timber faster and builds hydrostatic pressure behind it. So we lay an agi-drain at the base, pack free-draining aggregate behind the sleepers, wrap it in geofabric and add weep holes where they help. Keeping water moving away from the timber is the single best way to get the most years out of it. Where the height or a surcharge calls for it, we build to an engineered design and AS4678.

The figure depends on the height and length, the H4 grade and profile, the posts and footings, the drainage, site access and slope. A low garden terrace on an easy block sits at the lower end, while a longer or taller run with more excavation costs more. It is worth weighing the lower up-front price against the shorter service life - over the full life of the wall, concrete can work out better value. A timber wall will give you good service, but in our wet, high-rainfall climate it has a shorter life than a concrete sleeper or besser wall and will eventually need replacing. We come to your block, look at the slope, take the levels and talk through what you want the wall to do, whether that is a level yard, a driveway cut, a garden terrace or a building pad. How long does a timber sleeper wall last?

Honestly, less than a concrete or block wall. Treated H4 timber is rated for in-ground use and slows decay, but it does not stop it, and the Illawarra's high rainfall and damp ground work against timber over time. A well-built, well-drained timber wall gives good service, but it is not permanent and will eventually need replacing. Good drainage is the biggest thing that extends its life, which is why we never skip it.

Is a timber wall a good idea on a steep Illawarra block?

It can be, for the lower or lighter tiers, but it depends on the height and load. On steep escarpment blocks around Thirroul, Bulli and Mount Ousley, the taller structural retaining is usually better in concrete sleeper or block for strength and service life. Timber often works well for garden terracing higher up the slope where loads are lighter. We will assess the slope on-site and give you an honest recommendation, tier by tier, rather than pushing timber where it does not belong.

Do timber sleeper walls still need drainage?

Absolutely, and arguably more than any other wall. Trapped water rots timber from behind and builds hydrostatic pressure, so drainage protects both the structure and the timber's lifespan. Behind every timber wall we lay an agi-drain, pack free-draining aggregate, wrap it in geofabric to stop soil fines clogging the drain, and add weep holes where they help. In our high-rainfall escarpment climate, that drainage is the difference between a timber wall that gives good years and one that fails early.

Do I need council approval for a timber retaining wall?

It follows the same rules as any wall. In NSW, walls over about a metre, or any wall carrying a surcharge such as a driveway, generally need an engineered design to AS4678 and often council approval or a CDC through a certifier. Low garden walls with no surcharge are frequently exempt, but thresholds vary by council and site, so it should be checked. We build to the engineered design and can arrange or advise on the engineer and certifier - they design and approve it, we construct to that.

Why is timber cheaper than concrete or block?

Timber sleepers cost less to buy and are quick to install, so the up-front price is lower. The trade-off is service life: timber does not last as long as concrete or masonry in our climate and will need replacing sooner. So while timber saves money today, a concrete wall can be better value over the full life of the wall. We are happy to price both so you can compare the up-front cost against the longer-term value.

What timber do you use for retaining walls?

We use treated H4 hardwood or pine sleepers, which is the treatment grade rated for in-ground contact where rot and termite exposure are highest. Lower grades are not suitable for retaining and we will not use them. The sleepers fix to galvanised steel H-posts set in concrete footings, so the structural load sits on the steel and footings, not the timber alone. Even with H4, the wall's life still comes down to keeping water moving away from it through good drainage.
