Why are structural walls so common on Illawarra blocks?

Because so much of the region is sloping. The Illawarra is a narrow strip pinned between the escarpment and the sea, so a large share of blocks, especially around Figtree, Thirroul, Bulli and Mount Ousley, are steep.
