How we build an interlocking block wall

We begin with a compacted, level base and a solid footing course, because a segmental wall's stability starts from the bottom block. The blocks are then laid and interlocked course by course, each one setting back slightly to batter the wall into the slope for stability. For taller walls, layers of geogrid are laid horizontally between courses and extended back into the retained soil; this reinforces the soil mass so the wall and ground act together, and it is set by the engineered design. Drainage is built in as we go: an agi-drain at the base, free-draining aggregate directly behind the blocks, geofabric to stop soil fines clogging the drain, and weep holes where they help. Segmental walls drain well by nature, but we still detail the drainage properly because trapped water and hydrostatic pressure remain the main cause of failure. Are interlocking block walls suitable for a sloping Illawarra site?

Do I need engineering or council approval for an interlocking block wall?

It depends on the height and load, like any wall. In NSW, walls over about a metre, or any wall carrying a surcharge such as a driveway, generally need an engineered design to AS4678 and often council approval or a CDC through a certifier. Taller segmental walls with geogrid are almost always engineered. We build to the engineered design and can arrange or advise on the engineer and certifier - the engineer designs the wall and the certifier approves it, and we construct to that.
