Retaining Walls in Figtree

Often, yes. Because Figtree blocks are frequently steep, the walls tend to be taller, and walls over about a metre, or any wall carrying a driveway or structure near the top, generally need engineering design to AS4678 and often council approval or a CDC. Lower garden walls with no surcharge may be exempt, but on a foothill block this should always be checked, not assumed. We build to the certified engineered design and can arrange or advise on the engineer and certifier.

Cut-and-fill is how you create level ground on a slope. We cut into the high side of the block and use that material to fill and build up the low side, then hold both with retaining walls. Because Figtree sits on the escarpment foothills, most blocks slope enough that cut-and-fill is the only practical way to get a level yard, driveway or building pad. On steeper falls we often step the walls into tiers rather than build one tall wall.

On a steep foothill block a single tall wall can be impractical, harder to approve and more expensive to engineer. Tiering the slope into two or more stepped walls spreads the retained height, creates usable garden terraces between the levels, and often suits the site better. Each tier still needs its own drainage and, where required, engineering to AS4678. We assess the fall on site and recommend whether a single wall or tiers is the better approach.

Runoff is a serious factor in Figtree because the escarpment sheds heavy rain straight down onto the foothills. We build drainage into every wall: an agi-drain along the base to collect and carry water away, free-draining aggregate so water moves down to the drain, geofabric to stop soil clogging it, and weep holes through the face. Without this, water saturates the backfill and builds hydrostatic pressure, which is the number-one cause of wall failure. Getting the drainage right is where the job is really won.

It depends heavily on the slope, because steeper blocks usually mean taller walls, more engineering and trickier access. The cost also turns on the material, the length, the drainage and the site access. A short garden terrace is very different to a tall structural wall holding a driveway cut. Any figure is a guide only until we measure, so we come out, assess the fall and give you a fixed, itemised quote.

Yes, tight and steep access is normal on Figtree's foothill blocks and we plan the build around it. We assess how we can get materials and machinery onto the site during the free measure, and choose a wall system and method that suits the constraints.
